Iboga for Energy Healing: What the Medicine Does — and Does Not Do

By Jake Nylund — Co-founder, Transcend

Iboga for energy healing is not what the phrase suggests. People who come looking for something that restores vitality, lifts chronic depletion, and clears what feels blocked are describing a real need — and iboga does address it. Not as a tonic. Not as a stimulant. As something more specific: a medicine that removes what is consuming the energy in the first place.

Iboga comes from the root bark of Tabernanthe iboga, a shrub native to Central Africa and the foundational medicine of the Bwiti tradition. A single ceremony lasts 12–24 hours. Iboga is not scheduled under Canada's Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Ceremony at Transcend in Vancouver costs $2,000–$5,000 CAD. Medical screening is required before any ceremony date is set.

What Energy Healing Means in the Bwiti Tradition

The Bwiti people of Gabon and Cameroon have worked with iboga for centuries. Their concept of vitality does not map onto what Western wellness means by energy healing — not chi, not prana, not a flow state produced by breathwork or supplements.

In the Bwiti context, vitality is a product of clarity and relational integrity. The person who cannot act from a grounded centre — because unresolved material is occupying that centre — is not depleted in the way you correct with a supplement or a modality. They are blocked. The medicine addresses the blockage.

Iboga ceremony in this tradition is initiatory — not restorative in a passive sense. The experience does not deliver energy to a person. It confronts them with what they have been using energy to avoid. What comes after that confrontation — the period in which something genuinely different becomes possible — is what people who use the phrase “energy healing” are often pointing toward, without the language to describe what actually happened.

More on how the tradition shapes this work is in the post on the Bwiti spiritual tradition.

What Iboga Does to the Nervous System

The mechanism is pharmacological. Ibogaine — the primary alkaloid in iboga root bark — acts on four receptor systems simultaneously: mu-opioid receptors, the serotonin transporter, NMDA receptors, and sigma-2 receptors. It triggers upregulation of GDNF — glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor — a neuroplasticity protein depleted in brains affected by chronic stress, addiction, and unresolved trauma.

GDNF upregulation restores function in dopamine pathways that have been running at diminished capacity. This is the pharmacological substrate for what people describe as feeling more alive after iboga ceremony — not a stimulant effect, but the absence of what was consuming their resources.

The 2023 Stanford study published in Nature Medicine documented 88% reductions in PTSD symptoms, 87% in depression, and 81% in anxiety at one month in 30 special operations veterans who had already exhausted conventional treatment. These are not energy medicine numbers — they are clinical measurements of what happens when the neurological conditions producing depletion are addressed directly.

Noribogaine — ibogaine's primary metabolite — remains pharmacologically active in the body for weeks to months after ceremony. It produces a sustained anxiolytic effect and maintains elevated neuroplasticity during this window. This is the mechanism behind reports of sustained energy change — not the acute 12–24 hour ceremony, but the months of altered nervous system state that follow it.

The full detail on this mechanism is in the post on how ibogaine works.

The Integration Period — Where the Energy Shift Happens

The ceremony opens a window. The window does not stay open indefinitely.

The people who come back from iboga ceremony with the strongest and most sustained energy changes are overwhelmingly the people who used the post-ceremony period with intention — structured sleep, movement, integration support, and modification of the conditions that were producing the depletion in the first place. The ceremony creates the neuroplasticity. What is done in that window determines what changes.

The pattern that produces no lasting change is consistent: the ceremony was profound and the clarity was real. The person returned immediately to the same environment, the same relationships, the same unaddressed conditions. Six weeks later, the weight was back — sometimes heavier, because the contrast between what had briefly been possible and what they had returned to was now visible in a way it had not been before. The window closed. Nothing was done in it.

Integration support is not a bonus service — it determines whether the ceremony produces lasting change. The noribogaine window and what happens in it is the mechanism. Integration coaching — $150–$300 CAD per session at Transcend — covers this specifically. More on how this works is on the integration page.

Who Iboga for Energy Healing Is Not For

This is not a wellness service. The medical contraindications apply regardless of what you are seeking from the medicine — and a meaningful number of people who apply are not appropriate candidates.

Absolute disqualifiers include:

  • QT prolongation or significant cardiac arrhythmia on EKG — ibogaine extends the QT interval for the duration of the active experience
  • Current SSRIs or SNRIs without a completed physician-supervised taper — ibogaine inhibits the serotonin transporter, and the combination creates conditions for serotonin syndrome, which can be fatal
  • Lithium, methadone without a supervised transition protocol, most antipsychotics
  • Severe liver or kidney disease
  • Active psychosis or schizophrenia-spectrum disorder, or first-degree family history of either
  • Pregnancy
  • Acute psychiatric crisis — the medicine amplifies what is present, and entering it in a state of acute instability does not produce stability

SSRIs are a particularly common contraindication in this population because they are the most common conventional treatment for the conditions that produce the fatigue and depletion people are trying to address with iboga. If you are on an antidepressant and seeking this medicine, the supervised taper is a prerequisite — not a recommendation.

People primarily seeking a mystical experience, a shortcut to insight, or a way to feel something without sustained change are not appropriate candidates. The pharmacology of ibogaine is well-documented. Iboga does not deliver what people hope for — it delivers what they need, which is consistently not the same thing. The person who arrives expecting to leave energised typically leaves having encountered what was consuming the energy. That is not the same as leaving refreshed.

Full screening requirements are on the medical screening page.

What to Expect If You Proceed

The active ceremony lasts 12–24 hours. The content is biographical — specific memories, relational patterns, the logic of how you arrived at where you are. The emotional charge that would normally accompany reviewing that material is reduced. People describe clarity rather than suppression: looking at painful things without the dissociative distance they are used to.

The physical experience is demanding: tinnitus, closed-eye visuals, ataxia, nausea. This surprises people regardless of how much they have read. The 2–3 day recovery period that follows is not optional and is included in the programme.

The post-ceremony period — weeks one through eight — is when the energy shift that brought most people to this search becomes accessible. Noribogaine maintains a state of elevated neuroplasticity during this window. What is restructured in it — sleep, environment, relationships, the conditions that were producing the depletion — determines the twelve-month outcome.

Iboga ceremony at Transcend costs $2,000–$5,000 CAD and includes the on-site physician, continuous cardiac ECG monitoring, whole-plant root bark, facilitation, and 2–3 days of supervised recovery. Every application receives a personal response within 2–3 business days. Apply here or read about the iboga ceremony in detail first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does iboga do for energy?
Iboga does not add energy — it clears what is consuming it. The chronic depletion most people describe has a neurological substrate: the metabolic cost of maintaining suppression, avoidance patterns, and defences against unresolved material. Ibogaine triggers GDNF upregulation, restores dopamine pathway function, and creates a months-long neuroplasticity window through its metabolite noribogaine. What people describe after ceremony is not a stimulant effect — it is the reduction of what was consuming their resources.
Is iboga a stimulant?
No. Ibogaine is a psychedelic alkaloid from Tabernanthe ibogaroot bark, not a stimulant. The acute ceremony lasts 12–24 hours and is physically demanding — not energising. Some people report reduced fatigue in the weeks following ceremony. This is an effect of noribogaine, ibogaine's active metabolite, which maintains neuroplasticity and an anxiolytic state for weeks to months. It is not the mechanism of a traditional energy supplement.
Can iboga help with chronic fatigue?
Not if the fatigue is primarily medical in origin — thyroid dysfunction, autoimmune conditions, sleep apnoea, or other organic causes. If chronic fatigue has a substrate in unresolved trauma, chronic stress, long-term depression, or addiction, iboga may be relevant — but only after standard medical causes have been evaluated, and only if you are medically appropriate for ceremony. Iboga is not a substitute for proper medical investigation of persistent fatigue.
How long does the energy shift last after iboga ceremony?
This depends almost entirely on what is done during the integration period. Noribogaine remains active for weeks to months, sustaining neuroplasticity and an anxiolytic effect. People who use this window for structured integration support, environmental change, and meaningful shifts in the conditions that produced the depletion typically report changes that hold at six and twelve months. People who return immediately to the conditions that produced the problem typically report the effect fading within weeks.
How much does an iboga ceremony cost?
At Transcend in Vancouver, BC, iboga ceremony costs $2,000–$5,000 CAD. This covers the on-site physician, continuous cardiac ECG monitoring, whole-plant root bark, facilitation, and 2–3 days of supervised recovery. Integration coaching is $150–$300 CAD per session and is separate. Providers significantly below this range have removed something from the safety infrastructure — ask specifically what.
Who should not use iboga for energy healing?
Absolute contraindications: QT prolongation or significant cardiac arrhythmia; current SSRIs or SNRIs without a completed physician-supervised taper; lithium; methadone without a transition protocol; severe liver or kidney disease; active psychosis or schizophrenia-spectrum disorder; pregnancy; acute psychiatric crisis. People primarily seeking a shortcut to insight will be disappointed. The medicine shows people what they have been avoiding — not what they were hoping to find.
Is iboga legal in Canada?
Iboga root bark and ibogaine are not listed under Canada's Controlled Drugs and Substances Act — a different legal status from the US (Schedule I) or the UK (Class A). Providers in Vancouver can operate openly with full medical infrastructure. Legal status does not substitute for medical screening — the contraindications apply in every country.
How is iboga different from other energy healing modalities?
Most energy healing modalities — acupuncture, reiki, breathwork, somatic therapy — work gradually, across multiple sessions, and produce incremental changes. Iboga ceremony is a single 12–24 hour event with measurable neurological effects: GDNF upregulation, NMDA antagonism, opioid receptor binding, and a months-long noribogaine window. The mechanism is pharmacological. The Bwiti tradition that developed this medicine does not describe it in energy healing terms — it describes it as initiation and confrontation with what is true.
